You're good. Goat it was.
Though apparently, the owner had a dog that took to the thing and would run constantly.
I rather think that in the age in which this contraption was built, the kids were pressed into more useful service much earlier than today's kids - mucking out the stables, milking the cows, dragging buckets of water, etc. Or perhaps the owner lacked children to place in front of the butter churn.

Woohoo! I'll take that margarita, thank you.

Hmmm, I would guess a farm animal like a goat or a sheep.

I still think the kids should run on it though - it would make for an easier bed time!

My guess is a butter churn powered by a small animal walking on the treads.

Or it could be a device to keep small children occupied while Mommy has a quick nip.

Oh it was such fun and I think it made us stronger people for it, definitely very creative.

And I love the car seat. You're right, she'd go to jail for sure.

I think about the summer days I'd be out of sight of my parents/the house for hours. Kids can't really do that anymore, can they?

LOL. My parents actually bought a chicken farm in SoCal when they first moved to this country. Loved your story. I'll have to ask my mom if she knows how to put chickens to sleep.

All the time.
But we had so much fun!
My mother tells the story of how my 'cars seat' was my washtub with a pillow in it on the floor of the front passenger seat. Today she'd be thrown in jail.

You ever have those moments, while looking back at all the fun on the farm and wonder how you survived to adulthood? I know I do. My cousins and I ran all over my grandmother's farm, climbing on old machines, chasing animals . . . the whole deal.
